Eating Disorders Awareness: Because “Everybody Knows Somebody”

Eating disorders affect people young and old, male and female, chubby and thin. In fact, almost half of all Americans know someone who has an eating disorder. It’s a lot more common than you might think.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which takes place Feb. 24 – March 2, 2013, is the perfect time to help bring the issue to light. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), this year’s theme is “Everybody Knows Somebody.”

During National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, NEDA hopes “to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment.”

If everyone did just one thing to help raise awareness this National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the ripple effect could be amazing. It can be something big (like organizing a NEDA Walk) or small (like passing out National Eating Disorders Awareness promotional items in schools).

Your contribution can and will make a difference!

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: ‘Everybody Knows Somebody’

Were you aware that 10 million women and 1 million men in the United States are currently battling serious eating disorders?  And because so many people are secretive about their eating disorders, there may be even more cases that are not even reported.  As the media continue to push unrealistic standards of beauty, these numbers will only increase.

While we may not have control over what the media tells us is beautiful, we can help decrease the prevalence of eating disorders by spreading awareness.  This year, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week takes place February 26 – March 3, 2012.  The theme chosen for 2012 is “Everybody Knows Somebody” because, each year, awareness regarding eating disorders continues to grow.  According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), in 2011, people from all 50 states and 29 foreign countries participated in National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.  This year, will you help NEDA continue to spread the word?

There are so many different ways to pitch in — from Liking the NEDA’s Facebook Page to organizing your own Eating Disorders Walk — so it’s easy to get involved.  And, if you need help gaining support, there are even National Eating Disorder Awareness Week giveaways that you can distribute to members of your community.
