It’s Not Too Late to Get Involved with November Awareness Month

Although November is coming to its unofficial close, there are still several days left for you to participate in November Awareness Month. The month of November hosts some especially important awareness events, and every little bit of help counts towards making a difference. So whether you own a company, sponsor a fundraiser, or just want to spread awareness in your community there is plenty that you can do.

Which November awareness event is the best one to participate in? There are all important causes, so you can make your decision based on what feels right. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to take part in more than one event. Since plenty of people are not even aware which events take place in November Awareness Month, we will highlight the ones that are the most popular:

1. Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most notorious forms of the disease. Because it is so difficult to treat, the survival rate of pancreatic cancer patients is remarkably low. In fact, the early stages of pancreatic cancer exhibit no symptoms, which make it earn its name as the “silent” disease. The lack of symptoms causes people to neglect going for regular checks of the pancreas until it is too late. This is all the more reason to get involved with Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.

By distributing different awareness event items around in your community, you can encourage people to go to the doctor and get their clean bill of health. There are plenty of educational materials which can be acquired and handed out at work and in schools to let people know about the risk factors associated with the disease. Don’t wait – you could end up saving someone’s life.

2. Epilepsy Awareness

Epilepsy is a disorder that has stumped doctors for many years. Characterized by unprovoked seizures, over 2.5 million Americans suffer from the neurological condition. Furthermore, since the erratic symptoms of epilepsy are so “tricky”, the people who spend time with epileptics often do not know how to handle a seizure when it occurs.

For instance, a student in a classroom may be susceptible to seizures, in which case the teacher and students in the class should all know what to do. You must prevent the person enduring the seizure from swallowing their tongue so that they do not choke on it. However, you cannot put your hand in the person’s mouth as you run the risk of their jaw involuntarily closing on your fingers. The correct action is to find an instrument that cannot be broken and use it to hold down the tongue until the seizure has passed. This is where the importance of epilepsy awareness comes into play. Since most people do not know what to do in these situations, you can educate them in order to prevent more damage being done in the future.3. Adoption Awareness

There are countless children in this country alone that have been left without parents. Since they do not have the luxury of a stable support system, they will be destined to bounce around different foster homes and halfway houses, and their chances for success are limited. That is why when you adopt a child, you are saving their life in essence. The most important part of Adoption Awareness is spreading the valuable information that people considering adoption need to know.

This action can be anything including directing people towards the nearest adoption agency and explaining the process for anyone who is interested. If people are unsure about adopting, you can give them the facts on how many children are struggling without parents, and how anything they can do to help will change someone’s life.

Raise Awareness for Diabetes in November

Diabetes is a particularly frustrating disease for anyone who has it. It takes plenty of time, discipline, and life changes in order to be able to effectively deal with it. Because diabetes creates such a nuisance in people’s lives, serious emphasis needs to be placed on educating people and researching a cure. The future is hopeful in the fight against diabetes, especially since it can be prevented in some cases by carrying on a healthy lifestyle. Now let’s take a quick look at the causes and effects of diabetes, and then see how you can help raise awareness by getting involved. For those who don’t know, diabetes actually refers to a group of diseases which are characterized by high blood glucose levels. The abnormal level of glucose is caused by the body’s inability to produce the chemical insulin at an effective rate (insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose present in the blood). Diabetes is broken down into two main types:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – This diabetes is diagnosed in children and young adults. Previously known as juvenile diabetes, people who have this type do not produce any insulin. While only 10% of the people with diabetes has this type, the disease can still be managed with proper insulin therapy and education. Common symptoms of type 1 diabetes include frequent urination, unquenchable thirst, intense hunger, weight loss, and fatigue.
  • Type 2 Diabetes – Type 2 diabetes is the much more common form of the disease. In fact, millions of Americans suffer from it while even more are unaware that they are at risk. In this type of diabetes, the body either lacks in its production of insulin or the body cells ignore the insulin being produced. If the insulin is not being properly used, the body cannot carry the sugars from the blood to the cells. Common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include any symptoms from type 1, blurred vision, frequent infections, numbness in extremities, and slow-healing bruises.

Now that you have a better understanding of the two types of diabetes and their symptoms, we can talk a little bit about how the disease can be managed. As mentioned above, diabetes is unique from other diseases in the sense that it can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While this only applies to type 2 diabetes, it should be understood that creating a beneficial diet, exercising frequently, and maintaining a reasonable weight can drastically lower your level of risk. There are plenty of resources available for diabetics to ensure that they do not develop complications with the disease. Many diabetes cookbooks will provide diabetics with recipes that help maintain the level of glucose being processed in the body.

While regular insulin injections are available as the current method for coping with diabetes, this is clearly a preventative measure and not a cure. There is where diabetes awareness comes in. There is a still a ton of research that has to be done concerning the nature of this disease and how to beat it. Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated by those who struggle with diabetes every day. You can start small by handing out pamphlets at community events, detailing some of the information that has been provided above. If you need any more information, you can refer to the American Diabetes Association by clicking their logo in the middle of the page.

If you want to take the extra step, trying organizing an event in your town or at your company where you can educate as many people as possible at one time. You can even have someone who has diabetes come to your event to give the attendees a first-hand account of dealing with the disorder. You would be surprised at how much there is left to know about a disease such as this one.

Recycling Awareness Starts With You

As a society, we have come a very long way when it comes to recycling. Most communities have a recycling system in place where products with the designated recycling symbol (seen below) can be separated from the regular garbage and put out for collection. The real issue lies within the daily habits of individuals. While the resources have been put in place to create the virtuous cycle of recycling for some time, some people still do not make the effort to recycle in their daily lives. This is why the concept of recycling awareness is still extremely relevant in present day. In light of this perspective, it is the responsibility of each individual to do whatever they can to promote the act of recycling and the ultimate restoration of the health of the planet. As with every important cause, awareness starts small. Every day you can make sure that all the members of your family are placing recyclable materials in the designated bin. When you are in the office, make sure that your co-workers are doing the same.

Lots of offices still do not have a recycling system in place, so you can go the extra mile by volunteering to set up a recycling system in your cafeteria or break room. Encourage people to put their recyclable materials in the bin you have set up, and at the end of the day take it home to recycle on your own. Don’t worry if you sound like a nag – you are involved in a greater good by making an effort to conserve natural resources.Since not every recyclable item has the symbol on it, you can assume that any papers and plastics can be thrown into the recycling bin. What’s the worst that can happen? If the collection team feels the items are not recyclable, they will put them in regular waste. It’s better to recycle too much than not enough.

You can also promote recycling awareness in your community by setting up recycling bins in schools and the town hall. Education is crucial as far as recycling awareness is concerned, so getting children in the habit of recycling at a young age will make an exponential difference in the resulting health of the planet in future generations.

We need to establish a precedent in society that makes recycling as commonplace as throwing away trash. If we can continue to raise awareness about recycling, our children will inherit these principles and continue to instill them in the future.
